Chapter 13
A RAY OF SUNLIGHT PULLS me from my deep sleep. I languidly stretch before shaking away the last of my drowsiness and sitting up. At some point in the night, I had shaken off the furs as I now sit atop the soft blankets.
With a quick glance around, my eyes train on the kill already roasting on the fire. The smell of cooking venison makes my mouth water and my stomach rumble. The sound loud enough to draw both Ronen’s and Jed’s attention my way.
Jed is back in his human form, his pure white hair shinning in the morning sunlight. He strides to me with a cocky grin etched upon his handsome face. My first reaction is to bare my teeth, though we both know there’s little heat behind the threat.
Ronen on the other hand, has already resumed the task he was focused on before my unsightly reaction to breakfast. It looks like he is packing, or re packing, the limited supplies they brought along.
With a yelp, I’m lifted into a set of strong arms and moved closer to the roasting kill. Jed drops me in front of it before moving back to the bedding. In quick work, he rolls it and ties it, then tosses it at the small pile of other luggage sitting beside Ronen. The bedding manages to smack him in the back and Ronen turns with a fierce glare.
I snicker softly under my breath as the two have their manly little stare off to proves whose manhood is bigger than the others. Different species, sure, but same behaviors.
Jed breaks eye contact first which surprises me. I would have thought a dragon, a male one at that, half-breed or not, would be aggressively dominant towards other males. This submission he just showed Ronen goes against all I know about dragon kind and I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. I narrow my eyes on Jed as he works the deer off the fire and prepares it for the meal.
Male dragons don’t give in. Death is their only option if they can’t win a battle of wills and against a human. There’s no way Jed would have lost in a fight, unless Ronen has some nasty tricks up his sleeve. For Jed to submit without a fight could mean a couple different things.
One, he has fought Ronen in the past and lost, miserably. Or two, his respect for his partner overrides all the dragon instincts he has.
A hind leg of the buck is shoved before my face, breaking my train of thought instantly. Food has a way of drawing all my attention and this situation is no different.
With glee, I tear into the perfectly cooked meat with a strange gurgling in my throat. It’s so tender and juicy, it nearly melts on my tongue, flavor singing to my heart on the way down.
All too soon, only the bone remains, though I’m sure to lick it clean. Twice. Jed takes that as a plea for seconds
